Christ the Perfect Model

1 LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?  2 He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart  3 and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman, 4 who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the LORD, who keeps his oath even when it hurts, 5 who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent.  He who does these things will never be shaken.

Psalm 15

In this psalm David describes a perfect, blameless man who can enter God's presence.  In doing so he unwittingly describes Jesus Christ with these lofty characteristics.

1 LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?

You are holy, Lord, and I am not.  Even the best of me is tainted with sin.  My righteous act is to you a filthy rag.  “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.” (Is 64:6).  What uttered from my lips is unclean. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” (Is 6:5).  While the prophet Isaiah expressed his dismay at mankind's abhorrible condition, Apostle Peter encouraged the believers of Jesus to be holy.  “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'” (1 Pe 1:15-16).

2 He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart

Jesus Christ is the only man ever lived and will live who is sinless and therefore blameless.  He always does the will of the Father so he does what is righteous.  “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” (Jn 4:34)  He not only speaks the truth but He is the truth, because Jesus told his disciples, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (Jn 14:6).

3 and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman,

Jesus commands us to love our enemies.  Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.  If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?  And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?  Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Mt 5:43-48)

And He commands us to love our neighbors.  Jesus said: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Mt 22:37-40)  So who is our neighbor?  According to Jesus' parable of the good Samaritan, it was the robbed man's Samaritan rescuer who was also culturally his enemy (Lk 10:25-37)  So sometimes our enemy becomes our neighbor.  Jesus will not slander His neighbor or does him any wrong.  He always speaks the truth, even when He spoke woes to the Pharisees (Mt 23), so He casts no slur on His fellow man.

4 who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the LORD, who keeps his oath even when it hurts,

Jesus hates evil and gives wisdom to the God fearers.  He came to save the world (Jn 3:16).  He never relented from His mission, even when He struggled with the anticipated suffering.  His words predicting His death showed His emotion and determination, “Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.  Father, glorify your name!” (Jn 12:27-28) Even when he was crucified, Jesus prayed for His persecutors, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Lk 23:34).  He persevered to fulfill His oath even when it hurt.

5 who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent.  He who does these things will never be shaken.

Jesus freely gave His life for a payment to satisfy the demand of the law on our sin.  He rejected Satan's offer of an easy short cut to accomplish His mission on earth.  “The devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.  'All this I will give you,' he said, 'if you will bow down and worship me.'  Jesus said to him, 'Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”  (Mt 4:8-10).  Therefore Jesus was never shaken.  God raised Him from the dead, exalted Him and seated Him on His right side.

We the followers of Christ should pray for the Spirit's power to be holy and perfect as God is holy and perfect.  With Christ as our perfect model, may we be set apart to be holy and to love perfectly.
