Buying the Gift of God

购买神的恩赐

 

When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money and said,”Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”  Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!  You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.  Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord.  Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart.  For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.

西门看见使徒按手,便有圣灵赐下,就拿钱给使徒,说:把这权柄也给我,叫我手按着谁,谁就可以受圣灵。彼得说:你的银子和你一同灭亡罢!因你想神的恩赐是可以用钱买的。你在这道上无分无关;因为在神面前,你的心不正。你当懊悔你这罪恶,祈求主,或者你心里的意念可得赦免。我看出你正在苦胆之中 ,被罪恶捆绑。

Simon was a sorcerer practicing his magic in the city of Samaria.  He boasted that he was someone great and commanded the people's attention with his magical acts.  He was having a great time until Philip preached the gospel to them and they believed and were baptized.  Simon the sorcerer was one of those believers and was also baptized (Ac 8:9-13).

西门是一个行邪术的,在撒马利亚城行使他的邪术。他妄自称大,并且他用魔术的手法来得着大家的注意力。他在享受美好的时光,直到腓利传福音给他们,他们相信并受浸。行邪术的西门是那些信徒之一,并且他也受了浸(徒8:9-13)。

 

Before Simon became a believer he achieved 'greatness', albeit a false one, by sorcery.  He must have realized that as a believer he could no longer engage in the trade of darkness.  As a result he lost his popularity.  Do we value our popularity more than obedience to God?  Simon left behind his acts of wickedness.  Even with things that are neutral we have to give Christ the priority over them.  Just as Paul said, “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord...that I may gain Christ, and be found in him.” (Php 3:8-9)  If Jesus is not my Lord of all, He is not my Lord at all.

Peter and John were sent by the apostles to lay hand on these new believers and prayed for them to receive the Holy Spirit (Ac 8:14-17).  When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he saw that as a magic greater than his own.  He must have thought, “Since I have to forfeit my magic acts because they are unholy, if only I can acquire this holy act of calling down the Holy Spirit, I will regain my greatness.”  He wanted to buy this ability from Peter and John.  The severe rebuke of Simon from Peter indicated that Simon committed a grave sin in his request.

彼得和约翰被使徒差去按手在这些新信徒头上,并祈祷他们领受圣灵(徒8:14-17)。当西门看见使徒的按手带来圣灵,他看到一个奇术比自己的更了不起。他一定这样想,“既然我必须放弃我的邪术,因为它们是邪恶的,只要我能获得这个调动圣灵的神圣行为,我会夺回我的地位。”  他想向彼得和约翰购买这种能力。从彼得对西门的严厉斥责可见,西门因他的要求犯了严重的罪。

 

First of all, Simon sinned in his view of the gift of God not as a means for the glory of God but a tool to bring glory to himself.  He coveted the attention from the people that this act would bring.  When we do ministry, do we do it to bring people's focus on God or on us?  If people's focus is on us, the ministry will not bear lasting fruit and we will be doing it in vain.  “If any man builds on this foundation [Jesus Christ] using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light.  It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.  If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.” (1 Co 3:12-15)

首先,西门犯了罪,因他看神的恩赐不是作为荣耀神的方法,而是一种给自己带来荣耀的工具。他觊觎这种事所带来的人的关注。当我们做事工,我们是为了带人们的目光到神身上而做,抑或到我们的身上呢?如果我们是人的焦点,那事工就不会长出持久的果子,我们所做的就徒劳无功了。 “若有人用金、银、宝石、草木,禾秸在这根基[耶稣基督]上建造,各人的工程必然显露,因为那日子要将他表明出来,有火发现;这火要试验各人的工程怎样。人在那根基上所建造的工程若存得住,他就要得赏赐。人的工程若被烧了,他就要受亏损,自己却要得救;虽然得救,乃像从火里经过的一样“(林前3:12-15)。

 

Secondly, Simon sinned in thinking that he could gain the ability to call down the Spirit as he wished.  It is not for us to manipulate God, but to be like the clay in the hand of the potter, to be molded and shaped by God.  “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.” (Jer 18:6)  As the house of Israel, we the believers must also surrender our will to God's will for us.

其次,西门犯了罪,因为他以为他可以获得能够如他所愿调动圣灵的能力。不是我们能操纵神,但要像粘土在陶匠的手中,让神朔造成形。 “耶和华说:以色列家啊,我待你们,岂不能照这窑匠弄泥麽?以色列家啊,泥在窑匠的手中怎样,你们在我的手中也怎样。”(耶18:6) 就如以色列家,我们这些信徒也必须让我们的旨意向神的旨意降服。

 

Thirdly, Simon sinned in only wanting to do great thing for himself.  “Should you then seek great things for yourself? Seek them not.” (Jer 45:5)  We naturally want to do spectacular things, like walking on water (Mt 14:28-29), while Jesus wants us to do the mundane things well, like washing one another's feet as he did to His disciples (Jn 13:14).

第三,西门犯了罪,因为他只想为自己做伟大的事情。 “你为自己图谋大事麽?不要图谋!“(耶45:5),我们自然地希望做壮观的事情,像在水上行走(太14:28-29),而耶稣要我们做卑微的东西,像彼此洗脚,就如他洗他门徒的脚一样(约13:14)。

 

Oswald Chambers has the following thoughts along this line in My Utmost For His Highest daily devotional for 9/20:  “The expression of Christian character is not good doing, but God-likeness. If the Spirit of God has transformed you within, you will exhibit Divine characteristics in your life, not good human characteristics. God's life in us expresses itself as God's life, not as human life trying to be godly. The secret of a Christian is that the supernatural is made natural in him by the grace of God, and the experience of this works out in the practical details of life, not in times of communion with God.”

奥斯瓦尔德.章伯斯在他的每日灵修《竭诚为主》9月20日在这方面有以下的想法:“基督徒品格的表达并非好行为,而是神的形像。如果神的灵已经在内改变了你,你会在你的生命中表现出神圣的特性,而不是良好的人类特色。神的生命在我们里面表现为神的生命,而不是作为人类的生命试图变为敬虔。基督徒的一个秘密是,他靠神的恩典让超自然的在他里头成为自然,而这经验在生活中的实际细节上显出,不在与神共融的时间中显出。“

 

May we operate under the control of the Holy Spirit.  May God's supernatural be made natural in all of us in the practical details of our life.

愿我们在圣灵的控制下运作。愿神的超自然在我们所有人中,在我们生活的具体细节上成为自然。
