This is what the LORD says:“Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD.

When we boast of something, we are speaking with pride of something about ourselves.  Usually we boast of something about us that we consider superior to others.  We may think we are smarter, stronger, or richer than others.  Therefore we may boast of our superior intelligence, exceptional strength, or remarkable wealth.  However the Lord says that we should not take pride in these things.  Let's first see why we should refrain from boasting of our wisdom, strength, or wealth.  Then we will look at God's alternative to them.

It is good to seek wisdom so that we may serve God and others well.  Solomon, the wisest man in history, asked God for wisdom when he became the king of Israel.  “Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” (2 Ch 1:10)  However, wisdom ultimately comes from God our Creator, so we should not boast of it as though it originates with us.

Besides, human wisdom, no matter how excellent it seems, is no match of divine wisdom.  “'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,' declares the LORD.  'As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.'” (Isa 55:8-9)  Apostle Paul also said, “For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom.” (1 Co 1:25a)

Human wisdom is often a self delusion that leads to wickedness.  Therefore the proverb: “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.” (Pr 3:7)  It cannot stand before the Lord.  “For it is written: 'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.'” (1 Co 1:19)

So is our strength given by God to us.  David recognized this when he sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul, “It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.” (2 Sa 22:33)  Instead of boasting of his strength he praised God for giving him the strength.  He realized that “The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.” (Ps 29:11)

God is not impressed by our physical power.  “[T]he weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” (1 Co 1:25b)  “His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man; the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.” (Ps 147:10-11)  Instead He is pleased with those who worship Him in spirit and in truth while sustained by His faithful love.

Psalmist Asaph recognized that his life and provision were in God's hand, when he said, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Ps 73:26)  Apostle Paul, on the other hand, understood that he could face any circumstance in which the Lord put him, when he said, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” (Php 4:13)

Our wisdom and strength are both insignificant comparing to God's wisdom and strength through those considered by the world as foolish and weak.  “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” (1 Co 1:27)

While we see there is no reason we should boast of our wisdom or strength, it is even more foolish for us to boast of our wealth.  This is best illustrated by Jesus in following parable:

“The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop.  He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.  And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’  “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.” (Lk 12:16-21)

We ought not to boast of our wealth because our life is in God's hand.  “Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.” (Pr 11:28)

Another reason we should not boast of our wealth is because it will lead to pride.  God spoke through prophet Ezekiel against the king of Tyre: “By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, and because of your wealth your heart has grown proud.  “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “‘Because you think you are wise, as wise as a god, I am going to bring foreigners against you, the most ruthless of nations; they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom and pierce your shining splendor.” (Eze 28:5-7)  According to this, the pride of riches leads to the pride of wisdom, and ultimately to destruction.

Instead of boasting of our wisdom, strength, or riches, God tells us, if we have to boast, to boast of our knowledge and understanding of Him.  Only Jesus has the perfect knowledge and understanding of God.  This is how prophet Isaiah described Christ.  “The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD— and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.” (Isa 11:2-3a)

We will explore this next time.  In the mean time, we pray that you will seek a greater understanding and knowledge of God through our Lord Jesus Christ, and you will dwell in God's blessings.
