In With The New

“The time is coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.  It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD.  “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.  I will be their God, and they will be my people.  No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the LORD. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Have you ever tried to forget something, to remove it from your mind?  Yet the more you try, the more it sticks to your memory!  That is how we are with God's law.  The law points out our transgressions and sin takes the opportunity to produce in us the covetous desires.  Apostle Paul explained, “I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, 'Do not covet.'  But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire.” (Ro 7:7-8)  My effort to obey the law triggers my sinful nature to produce sin.  When I become aware of my compliance with a particular command and become proud of my work, sin enters me.  “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.  And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.  As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.“ (Ro 7:15-17)  I hate it when I repeatedly commit the sins.  “The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” (Mt 26:41)  Sometimes I feel so hopeless and helpless!

The Old Covenant requires the Israelites to obey the law in all its commandments in order to receive God's blessings.  God said, “Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, and so that you may live long in the land that the LORD swore to your forefathers to give to them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.” (Dt 11:8-9)  This covenant becomes ineffective with me when I fail to do what the law prescribes and do what it prohibits.  All it takes is one small violation.  “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” (Jas 2:10)

So the bilateral Old Covenant of law does not do me any good in regard to my salvation.  I cannot hold up my end of the bargain.  Knowing this God gives the Israelites (and the Gentiles who are grafted on) the New Covenant of grace, made possible by sending His Son Jesus Christ to the world to die for our sin.  So this unilateral covenant's effectiveness does not depend on my ability to fulfill my obligation.  It all depends on the completed work of Christ on the cross.  Instead of commands written on stone tablets, the law is written in our hearts and minds.  We will live up to the spirit of the commands without dwelling on the superficial letters. Instead of struggling to meet the demand of the law, we have the grace of God to forgive our sins and remember them no more.  Instead of being a rebellious people, our relationships with God are restored.  God is our Father and we are His children.  We are reconciled to God.  We know God directly and intimately through His Son Jesus Christ.  It is our first hand personal experience of God.

What a glorious day that would be!  Would you desire such day in your life?  You can be part of this New Covenant with God if you pray to accept Christ as your Savior and Lord.
