Walk with God

5:24 Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. 6:9 Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.

Genesis 5:24, 6:9

I know of two references in the Bible about someone who walked with God.  One is Enoch and the other is Noah.  They are both in the first book of the Old Testament, Genesis.  Walking with God means getting along with God.  It is a wonderful thing to be able to walk with other people in true friendship, because true friendship provides love and support.  “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” (Pr 18:24) “If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! “ (Ecc 4:10)  Walking with others in our journey of faith can give mutual encouragement, but people are fickle and they will disappoint us.  Walking with God as a lifestyle always satisfies us, because God is faithful and His will is perfect.  Let's look the meaning and characteristic of such walk.

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.” (Ge 17:1)  So to walk with God is to be blameless.  How can one be blameless like Noah among the people of his time?  One must walk faithfully and wholeheartedly with God as is described by King David in his charge to his son Solomon, when he set him up as the successor to his throne.  “Observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go, and that the LORD may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’” (1 Kgs 2:3-4)  So walking with God is to live in accordance to the law of God.  “Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD.” (Ps 119:1)

We know that in our human frailty we cannot keep God's law, so we need God's help to keep us from stumbling in our walk, as David experienced in his life.  “For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.” (Ps 56:13)  “For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the LORD in the land of the living.” (Ps 116:8-9)

We ought to follow the footsteps of “a great cloud of witnesses” and to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles”, and to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Heb 12:1) while walking with God.  “Thus you will walk in the ways of good men and keep to the paths of the righteous.” (Pr 2:20)

To walk with God we have to resist the bad influence of the world and avoid idolatry.  Prophet Micah declared, “All the nations may walk in the name of their gods; we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.” (Micah 4:5)

Prophet Malachi conveyed to the priests of his day God's command to them to walk with Him: living in reconciliation with God and leading many away from sin.  “He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.” (Mal 2:6)

As forgiven sinners reconciled to God, we have the Spirit living within us.  If we allow Him to lead us, He will guide our every step in our walk with God to overcome the sinful nature.  “So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.  For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.  The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.  Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” (Gal 5:16-25)  Walking with God is living by the Spirit, which yields the fruit of the Spirit to counteract the sinful nature.  Walking with God is keeping in step with the Spirit.

Apostle John said that walking with God is love: “And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.” (2 Jn 6)  God cares how we live our life and He cares that we obey His commands out of love for Him and not out of obligation.  We should live a life of gratitude because of what Jesus did for our salvation.  We love God because He first loves us.

Walking with God also means walking in the truth.  Apostle John told his children in the faith, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” (3 Jn 4)  Walking in the truth is walking in the light instead of darkness.  “If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.” (1 Jn 1:6)

What a friend we have in Jesus! Walk with Him for He is the way and the truth and the life (Jn 14:6).  Walking with Him we will find freedom and joy.  Today do you want to walk in the truth, in the light, in the Spirit, in love and obedience?  You can start your walk with Jesus right now!
