Thanksgiving

感恩

Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done.

“Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.  As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, 'Jesus, Master, have pity on us!'  When he saw them, he said, 'Go, show yourselves to the priests.' And as they went, they were cleansed.  One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice.  He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.” (Lk 17:11-16)

It is easy for us to criticize the ungratefulness of the nine lepers who were healed.  I am guilty of frequent negligence of thanking others who had blessed me.  To a greater extent, I have not thanked God enough for His salvation and blessing to me.  If gratefulness is an overflow of our heart when we count our blessings, I must practice counting my blessings all the time and particularly on Thanksgiving Day.

I am thankful to Jesus who has given me the eternal life through faith in Him, my wife who loves me and sticks with me even when I was not lovable, and my children who also know and received Christ.  I am thankful for my father who accepted Jesus as his Savior several years before he passed away, and my mother who received Jesus' salvation many years before my father did.  I am thankful for my siblings and their spouses for showing their love for me.

There are also good biblical reasons for us to give thanks to God.  First in my mind is for our salvation.  “I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.” (Ps 118:21)  Apostle Paul bemoaned his wretchedness but gave thanks to God for his salvation.  “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Ro 7:24-25)

God saved us not because of our goodness but because of His.  So we give thanks to God for His goodness and love.  “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” (1 Ch 16:34)  This praise is echoed through the Psalms (Ps 118:29, 107:8, 15, 21, 31).  It is by God's grace through faith that we are saved, not of our work.  So we give thanks to God for His grace, as Paul told the Corinthian Christians, “I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Co 1:4)

God not only saves us from eternal damnation, He also delivers us from present danger.  For this we give thanks.  “I am under vows to you, O God; I will present my thank offerings to you.  For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.” (Ps 56:12-13)

We receive our daily breads and for this we give thanks, just as Jesus gave thanks and broke the five loaves before giving them to the five thousand people to eat.  The people were filled (Mt 14:19).

We also give thanks to God for He has given us faith, hope and love.  “We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints— the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel.” (Col 1:3-5)

“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Co 15:57)  We also thank God for our triumph over sin and death.

Apostle Paul also instructed Timothy to thank God for everyone He brought into his life.  “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone.” (1 Tim 2:1)  In fact he told the believers to give thanks to God for everything and in all circumstances: “always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Eph 5:20)  “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Th 5:18)

In other words, God wants us to look at what we have from Him and not what we do not have, and trust that He is sovereign and will give us what is good for us.  Will you count your blessings and give thanks to Jesus now?
